Kansas City Power & Light recently made a generous donation to Green Hills Community Action Agency that will hopefully help folks stay a little cooler during the sweltering days ahead. KCP&L, a large provider of electrical service within several of the counties Green Hills serves, has provided the CAA with 20 box fans as part of its Heat Relief Fan Donation Effort. The fans are set to be distributed to low income families.

Green Hills Community Action Agency is committed to providing high quality service to those in need of help. If you are a current KCP&L customer with energy assistance approval, and would like to see if you qualify to receive a fan through this program, please contact the GHCAA Central office by calling 660-359-3907.

Green Hills Community Action Agency has been advised by federal and state entities to prepare for a 50% reduction in its Community Service Block Grant (CSBG) funding beginning October 1, 2011. Community Action Agencies nationwide utilize CSBG funding to support outreach offices in local communities and many, including GHCAA, are faced with closing these local service-access points.

To meet future budget targets, Green Hills Community Action Agency will be implementing immediate changes to its outreach system. The agency will be going to a centralized staffing pattern, with services being provided out of the Central Office in Trenton, MO after July 22, 2011.

While GHCAA will not have a physical office open in each county after July 22nd, residents can still receive assistance and access all services with little to no interruption. Individuals in the Green Hills Region (which includes the counties of: Caldwell, Daviess, Grundy, Harrison, Linn, Livingston, Mercer, Putnam, and Sullivan) are asked to contact GHCAA by dialing their local office number as they have in the past. As always, staff will be able to connect residents to GHCAA services and provide information on resources available within local communities.

Again, GHCAA will be closing its county outreach offices after July 22nd. To receive assistance and access services, residents are asked to contact GHCAA by dialing their local office number.

Emergency utility assistance begins June 1. Green Hills Community Action Agency believes that great customer service is a must. With that in mind, we are changing the way the clients receive help with emergency utility shut off and threats of disconnect with primary electrical bills this summer.

No appointment is needed for those seeking assistance. Simply call your local Green Hills Community Action Agency. We will gather your information over the phone, then contact your utility vendor and process your application. No appointment in your county office is necessary. Counties that are served by GHCAA include: Caldwell, Daviess, Grundy, Harrison, Mercer, Sullivan, Putnam, Linn, and Livingston.

This process is for those who have qualified for and received energy assistance after Oct. 1, 2010. For those who have not yet applied for energy assistance, a complete application will need to be filled out. To obtain an application, please drop by your local Green Hills Community Action Agency, and pick up an application. The application will be processed as a crisis provided that the client has a disconnect notice.

The summer ECIP program is only for those households who are disconnected or soon will be. All emergency applications will be processed in the Grundy County office by Energy Services Staff members. They include: Terri Henderson, Amanda Swan, Jennifer Farmer, Alicia Roy, and Kim Brashear. Persons with questions are encouraged to contact Amanda Swan at 660-359-3907.

Green Hills Community Action Agency is seeking homes to weatherize for free.

Persons falling at 200% of Federal Poverty Guidelines or below qualify for this program. A family with one person living in the household with an annual income of $21,780, a two person household with an income of $29,420 annually, a three person household with an annual income of $37,060, a family of four with an income of $44,700 or a family of five with an income of $52,340 will qualify for this service.

GHCAA utilizes certified energy auditors to examine the home to determine which weatherization items are needed. Typical things done to the home include attic insulation, foundation insulation, wall insulation, clean and tune of furnaces, caulking, and weather-stripping. An average of $6500 per home is spent.

Rental properties are eligible with the landlord paying $300 of the cost of weatherizing the home. The agency has a record of decreasing air infiltration into the home by 30-40%. This results in significant savings on utility bills. The application process is very simple to complete. Contact your local GHCAA today to fill out an application.

Plans call for weatherization between 500 to 600 homes during the grant period which ends in March of 2012. Persons with questions about the program are encouraged to call Terri Henderson at 660-359-3907.
